ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Optical fibers are butt joined in a cast Wood's metal sleeve. The bore in the sleeve is formed by casting around a stainless steel wire. The resulting bore tolerance provides good alignment of bare fibers. The fibers are secured in the sleeve by crimping the sleeve or by metting its ends. The assembly is protected with a length of heat shrinkable tubing.
