ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An optical waveguide comprising a substrate with a poly- crystalline silicon layer formed on the substrate and having a predetermined pattern and containing one or both of oxygen and nitrogen with the concentration of the atoms selected so that the refractive index in the polycrystalline silicon layer at least near its contact surface is greater than the refractive index of the substrate. In certain of the embodiments the outer surface of the polycrystalline layer is concave or convex.
