Abstract of the Disclosure An optically active device comprising an optical fiber, a light source and a coupler is disclosed. The optical fiber has a core made of a silicate glass containing Rb and/or Cs oxide. The core is doped with Nd3+ as an active ion and transmits light at 1.3 µm band. The light source generates excitation light at 0.8 µm. The coupler directs the excitation light from the light source into the core of the optical fiber. A signal light or a spontaneous light at 1.3 µm band which is transmitted in the core stimulates Nd3+ to emit light at 1.3 µm band. As a result an optical function such as optical amplification can be effected at 1.3 µm band.

Dispositif optiquement actif comprenant une fibre optique, une source lumineuse et un coupleur. La fibre optique comprend un coeur en verre de silice qui contient de l'oxyde de Rb et/ou de Cs. Le coeur est dopé avec des ions actifs Nd3+ et il transmet la lumière à une longueur d'onde de 1,3 µm. La source lumineuse produit un rayonnement d'excitation à 0,8 µm. Le coupleur achemine le rayonnement d'excitation de la source lumineuse vers le coeur de la fibre optique. Un signal lumineux ou un rayonnement spontané à une longueur d'onde de 1,3 µm transmis dans le coeur stimule les ions Nd3+ de façon à leur faire émettre un rayonnement de 1,3 µm. Ainsi, une fonction optique, par exemple l'amplification optique, peut être réalisée à une longueur d'onde de 1,3 µm.
