An optical head having a beam splitting means disposed in the light path from a collimating lens to a beam-shaping means, whereby the light beam from a semiconductor laser beam source retains its elliptical cross section while it passes through a beam splitting means, and its cross section is not made circular until it arrives at a beam-shaping means, so that the size of the beam splitting means, the converging lens and other optical members can be reduced, which makes the optical head compact and lightweight.
