ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An optical heterodyne detection pulse receiving system comprises a local oscillator for generating a laser light wave; a half-mirror for aligning the wave fronts of the local laser light wave from the local oscillator and of a modulated light wave, resulting from the modulation of a laser carrier with a pulse signal; a photoelectric converter for receiving the local laser light wave and the modulated light wave, and generating an elec- tric signal having a frequency equal to the difference thereof. Timing circuitry is provided for extracting the timing signal of the pulse signal from the electric signal and an extractor extracts from the electric signal an intermediate frequency signal equi- valent to the frequency difference between the local oscillator light wave and the laser carrier. A local oscillator control circuit is provided for comparing the intermediate frequency signal and the timing signal and so controlling the local oscil- lator as to synchronize the Nth multiple (N is a positive integer) of the half cycle of the intermediate frequency with the full cycle of the repeating frequency of the pulse signal. The inven- tion permits the intermediate frequency to be reduced to less than one third of the value used in prior art systems without causing pulse wave form distortion.
