ABSTRACT Optical information transmission system for the bidirectio- nal transmission of communication signals between a central station (1) and several subscriber units (5), which has the central station (1) connected to an outside-line-plant-equipment (3) via one or two monomode optical fibres, which is shared by a group of subscribers (5) and is installed close to them and which has the subscriber units (5) connected to the outside-line-plant- equipment (3) via optical fibres; the subscriber units (5) have optical transmitters whose optical output signal is not adapted to the transmission characteristics of monomode optical fibres, and the outside-line-plant-equipment (3) contains a converter (10, 11) which converts the optical signals transmitted from the subscriber units (5) to the outside-line-plant-equipment (3) into optical signals which are appropriate for further transmission via the monomode optical fibre (2).
