IP packet transmission equipment in a network containing backbone and branch transmission lines and transmits optical path signals between two nodes via logically defined optical paths. Wavelength demultiplexing means demultiplexes a wavelength-multiplexed signal from each backbone transmission line to form optical path signals. IP packet routing means converts a transmission signal from each branch transmission line to IP packets for outputting the destination corresponding to routes. IP/optical path converting means converts the IP packets to optical path signals. Optical path switching means cross-connects optical path signals from the wavelength demultiplexing means and the IP/optical path converting means to destination output routes. Optical path multiplexing means wavelength multiplexes optical path signals on predetermined routes to generate an output wavelength-multiplexed signal which is output to each backbone transmission line. Optical path signals contain an optical path payload for storing the IP packet to generate a payload signal.
