Optically active d- and l-isomers of 4-[1-(2,3- dimethylphenyl)ethyl]-1H-imidazole (known as medetomidine) or their non-toxic, pharmaceutically-acceptable, acid- addition salts, are provided herein. Pharmaceutical compositions contains the d-enantiomers of medetomidine, and pharmaceutical compositions containing the separated d- or l-enantiomers of medetomidine are also provided herein. Methods for the separation of the d- and l-isomers are also taught. The separated enantiomers are useful in a method of sedation/analgesia, or the treatment of anxiety or hypertension, or in therapy or as a selective .alpha.2-receptor agonist.
