A method and apparatus for detecting tissue abnormality, particularly precancerous cervical tissue, through fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy, or a combination of fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy. In vivo fluorescence measurements were followed by in vitro NIR Raman measurements on human cervical biopsies. Fluorescence spectra collected at 337, 380 and 460 nm excitation were used to develop a diagnostic method to differentiate between normal and dysplastic tissues. Using a fluorescence diagnostic method, a sensitivity and specificity of 80 % and 67 % were observed for differentiating squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) from all other tissues. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, using Raman scattering peaks observed at selected wavenumbers, SILs were separated from other tissues with a sensitivity and specificity of 88 % and 100 %. In addition, inflammation and metaplasia samples are correctly separated from the SILs.

Procédé et appareil de détection d'anomalies tissulaires notamment de tissus précancéreux du col de l'utérus par spectroscopie à fluorescence ou Raman, ou leur combinaison. Des mesures effectuées in vivo par fluorescence ont été suivies de mesures in vitro par spectroscopie Raman dans le proche I.R. sur des biopsies du col humain. Les spectres de fluorescence recueillis pour des excitations à 337, 380 et 460 nm ont servi à mettre au point une méthode de diagnostic permettant de différencier les tissus normaux d'avec les tissus atteints de dysplasie qui donne une sensibilité de 80 % et une spécificité de 67 % pour la différenciation des lésions intraépithéliales squameuses (SIL) d'avec les autres tissus. Selon un autre aspect de l'invention, on a pu, par l'observation des pics de diffusion Raman à des longueurs d'onde données, distinguer des lésions intraépithéliales squameuses avec une sensibilité de 88 % et une spécificité de 100 %. On peut de plus distinguer correctement les échantillons d'inflammations ou de métaplasies d'avec les SIL.
