60288-2767 ABSTRACT Method and apparatus for both laboratory (or batch) measurement and continuous measurement and control of the stability of colloidal systems such as heavy fuel oils, using an optical titration procedure with near-infrared radiation. The apparatus is an apparatus for determining the quantity of a diluent which when mixed with a colloidal fluid causes colloidal particles in said fluid to form floccular aggregates, comprising in combination means for adding successive increments of said diluent to said fluid, means for irradiating said fluid with radiation which is characterized by having a substantial interaction with said aggregates by at least one of the processes of absorption and scattering, means for monitoring radiation emanating from said fluid to indicate the formation off floccular aggregates within said fluid, and means for concentrating said irradiating radiation into a beam of small cross sectional area, the quantity of diluent which causes colloidal particles to form said aggregates being indicated by the total of said added increments of diluent up to the point at which the formation of floccular aggregates within said fluid is indicated.
