A method and a system is provided for discriminating between healthy cervical tissue and pathologic cervical tissue based on the fluorescence response of the tissue to laser excitation (LIF) and the backscatter response to illumination by white light (in the spectral range of 360 to 750 nm). L'invention concerne une technique et un système permettant de distinguer les tissus sains du col utérin des tissus pathologiques, d'après la réponse de fluorescence du tissu à la fluorescence induite par laser et sa rétrodiffusion de lumière blanche (dans l'intervalle de 360 à 750 nm). Le rapprochement des réponses au laser et à la lumière blanche, ainsi qu'une évaluation de la corrélation spatiale entre sites tissulaires proches avec un algorithme de </= distance >/= statistiquement significatif tel que la distance de Mahalanobis entre ensembles de données, peut améliorer la discrimination entre tissus normaux et anormaux.
