ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An asynchronous type optical modulation/ demodulation system of the type which transmits data by means of optical fibers is characterized by a trans- mitting circuit comprising a leading and falling edge detection circuit to generate pulses in response to the leading or falling edge of the electric input signal data. A converter converts the output signal from the leading and falling edge detection circuit into pulses of positive or negative polarity in response to the electric input signal, and a light emitting element driving circuit inputs a signal of a predetermined level in response to a ready-for-sending signal and the posi- tive or negative polarity from the conversion means. A light emitting element is charged by the light emitting element driving circuit and intensity-modulated with the input signal and an optical coupling means optically couples the output light from the light emitting element to the optical fibers and by a receiving circuit. The receiving circuit comprises an optical coupling means to optically couple the fibers to the light emitting element and the light emitting element converts the light signal transmitted through the optical fibers into an electrical signal element. A gain variable amplifying circuit amplifies the electric signal from the light receiving element to a predetermined level and an averaging circuit averages the output from the gain variable amplifying circuit. A couple of binary circuits compare the averaged output from the averaging circuit with the output pulse from the gain variable amplifying circuit and output binary signal in response to the positive or negative polarity thereof respectively, and a flip-flop circuit in- puts the output from the binary circuits to the set and the reset terminals respectively and outputs the received data.
