ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is apparatus for modulating the optical transmittance of a radiation beam path which avoids the necessity for a high voltage source of some prior art devices (using the Kerr effect) and avoids the use of rotary parts used in other devices with their disadvantage of limited bearing life. The apparatus comprises a piezoelectrically driven member having a free extremity arranged to be driven towards and away from an adjacent path of a radiation beam in response to electrically controlled deformation of a piezoelectric element. The free extremity of the driven member carries a body having a transmissivity for the radiation of the beam which is different from that of the adjacent portion of the beam path. The piezoelectric element is connected to an electrical circuit which causes it to deform to move the body towards and away from the beam path. The rest position of the body may be adjusted by including a source of d.c. bias in the electrical circuit.
