An optical modulator is provided with a light guide (3) formed on a substrate (1) having electro-optical effects; a traveling wave electrode (4), which is formed on a side of one plane of the substrate (1), and is composed of a center conductor (4a) for a high frequency electric signal for applying a high frequency electric signal which modulates light, and grounding conductors (4b, 4c); and a bias electrode composed of center conductors (22a, 23a) for applying a bias voltage to light, and grounding conductors (22b, 22c, 23b, 23c). The light guide (3) is provided with a high frequency electric signal interacting section (20) for modulating the phase of light by applying a high frequency electric signal to the traveling wave electrode (4); and bias interacting sections (19, 21) for adjusting the phase of light by applying the bias voltage to the bias electrode. The bias interacting sections (19, 21) are provided to sandwich the high frequency electric signal interacting section (20) in front and rear in a light propagating direction.

L~invention concerne un modulateur optique pourvu d~un guide de lumière (3) formé sur un substrat (1) ayant des effets électro-optiques ; d'une électrode à onde circulante (4), qui est formée sur un côté d~un plan du substrat (1) et est composée d~un conducteur central (4a) pour signal électrique haute fréquence permettant d~appliquer un signal électrique haute fréquence qui module la lumière, et de conducteurs de mise à la masse (4b, 4c) ; et d'une électrode de polarisation composée de conducteurs centraux (22a, 23a) permettant d'appliquer une tension de polarisation à la lumière, et de conducteurs de mise à la masse (22b, 22c, 23b, 23c). Le guide de lumière (3) est pourvu d~une section d~interaction de signal électrique haute fréquence (20) permettant de moduler la phase de lumière en appliquant un signal électrique haute fréquence à l~électrode à onde circulante (4) ; et de sections d~interaction de polarisation (19, 21) permettant de régler la phase de lumière en appliquant la tension de polarisation à l~électrode de polarisation. Les sections d~interaction de polarisation (19, 21) servent à prendre en sandwich la section d~interaction de signal électrique haute fréquence (20) à l~avant et à l~arrière dans la direction de propagation de la lumière.
