An optical modulator comprises a bi-moded fibre (2) for supporting first and second different optical transmission modes, coupled between input and output single mode fibres (1, 3). The two modes in the bi- moded fibre (2) interfere and the intensity of the radiation that passes to the single mode output fibre (3) is a function of the relative phases of the first and second modes. The bi-moded fibre (2) is electrically poled and is provided with modulating electrodes (19, 20). When a modulating voltage from a modulating source (V) is applied to the electrodes, the refractive index of the waveguide for the first transmission mode is altered relative to the refractive index of the waveguide for the second mode such as to change the phase difference between the modes at the entrance to the output fibre (3) so as to control the intensity of optical radiation that passes through the output fibre (3).

L'invention concerne un modulateur optique comprenant une fibre bimode (2) pour prendre en charge un premier et un second modes de transmission optiques différents, couplée entre des fibres monomodes d'entrée et de sortie (1, 3). Les deux modes dans la fibre bimode (2) interfèrent et l'intensité de la radiation passant dans la fibre de sortie monomode (3) est une fonction des phases relatives des premier et second modes. La fibre bimode (2) est polarisée électriquement et comprend des électrodes de modulation (19, 20). Lorsqu'une tension de modulation provenant d'une source de modulation (V) est appliquée aux électrodes, l'indice de réfraction du guide d'ondes pour le premier mode de transmission est modifié par rapport à l'indice de réfraction du guide d'ondes pour le second mode de façon à changer la différence de phase entre les modes à l'entrée de la fibre de sortie (3) afin de pouvoir commander l'intensité de la radiation optique passant à travers la fibre de sortie (3).
