An optical modulator comprising a light source and a device for turning on/off the output light from the light source in which the number of gradations of light outputted from the device can be increased without increasing the frequency of a clock signal serving as the unit in the on/off control of the output light from the light source. A light intensity modulation circuit (11) generates an intensity modulation signal from a luminance signal YS and a synchronizing signal and delivers it to a power supply (12), so that a light source (13) outputs light subjected to intensity modulation according to the luminance signal. A pulse width modulation circuit (14) generates a pulse width modulation signal from the luminance signal YS, the synchronizing signal and the clock signal and delivers it to a light valve (15), which outputs light subjected to pulse width modulation according to the luminance signal.
Cette invention concerne un modulateur optique comprenant une source lumineuse et un dispositif de coupure/ouverture de la source lumineuse. Le nombre de gradations de la lumière émise par le dispositif peut être accru sans augmentation de la fréquence d'un signal d'horloge intervenant dans la commande de marche/arrêt de la source lumineuse. Un circuit de modulation d'intensité de la lumière (11) produit un signal de modulation d'intensité à partir d'un signal de luminance YS et d'un signal de synchronisation et transmet le signal de modulation d'intensité à une alimentation en puissance (12), de sorte qu'une source lumineuse (13) émet une lumière soumise à une modulation d'intensité conformément au signal de luminance.
