ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An optical multiplexer/demultiplexer comprises an optically trans- missive body having three or more sides. Interference filters are provided on all but one of the sides and angled spacers are provided to connect optically the filters with collimating lenses. In the case of the side without a filter a spacer connects that side directly with a collimating lens. Optical fibers are joined optically to the free ends of the collimating lenses. When a laser beam containing several wavelengths is passed into the optical fiber which is optically connected to the unfiltered side of the body, the beam passes through the body and a portion having a specific wavelength is transmitted by the first filter it engages the remainder being reflected. The reflected portion impinges on a second filter which transmits a second wavelength portion and reflects the rest and so on until ultimately all the wavelengths in the beam have been directed to different specific output optical fibers. The device has a shorter optical path that conventional devices of this type and correspondingly improved insertion loss.
