An optical profile reader for key duplicating machines comprising a photoemitter positioned on one side of the profile to be read, a photodetector facing the photoemitter on the opposite side of the profile to be read, an optical system interposed between the photoemitter and the photodetecter, an electronic circuit controlled by the output signal of the photodetector and motors for causing the key to move in a plane orthogonal to the light rays along two orthogonal directions, the motors being controlled by a threshold discriminator circuit. The electronic circuit comprises the threshold discriminator set at a value between the values corresponding to the maximum illumination state and minimum illumination state of the photodetector.
