An optical projection system is provided which may be used to build a compact, rugged, non-contact optical, length and/or speed measuring apparatus based on Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). Such an apparatus may be used to measure the length and/or speed of continuously moving targets or industrial products produced continuously. The system of the present invention creates an interference field by exploiting an asymmetric beam configuration (e.g. by using a non-diffracted beam and a diffracted beam). The system is able to exploit a wavelength independent, low frequency interference field which may be created for example by means of blazed diffracting optical elements possessing relatively low joint spatial frequency.
