ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The principle of operation of apparatus according to this invention is based upon interrogating the image of the target to be ranged at a selected spatial frequency. The image modulation at the selected spatial frequency will only be a maximum when the image is in sharp focus. The region of possible points of focus is interrogated by a lined grating which oscillates relative to said region in order to determine the point in the region at which the image modulation has its maximum value. The point of focus thus determined provides an indication of the range of the target.
