PHM 8974 ABSTRACT A unit for optical1y reading a rotating video disk comprises a semiconductor diode laser for producing a reading beam and a lens system to focus the beam. An automatic track- ing system has a scan wobbler with an electro-mechanical drive to periodically move the radiation source to cause the read spot in the focussing plane to move periodically about a mean position with an amplitude smaller than the read spot size (scan wobble) in a direction transverse to the information track being read. The unit also contains a focussing wobbler with an electro-mechanical drive means for periodically moving the radiation about a mean position with low amplitude (focuss- ing wobble) in a direction normal to the information plane at the location of the read spot. At least one of the wobblers comprises a metal resilient rod-shaped carrier with the rad- iation source secured to its end and a metal heat sink to which the rod-shaped carrier is attached. Piezo-electric drive means are rigidly connected to the radiation source carrier and also rigidly connected to parts of the read unit which are stationary.
