ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In optical data transmission systems it is desirable to interconnect various stations so that data arising at any one of the stations is trans- mitted to all of the stations. With this arrangement it is necessary to include a system for determining whether a station is receiving, at any parti- cular time, data from only one other station or whether it is receiving superimposed data from two or more stations. This latter condition known as collision is detected in a special optical receiver of the invention. An optical receiver embodying the present invention is of the type which receives optical pulse signals from two or more optical transmitters. Each pulse signal has been modulated in intensity with respect to two logical levels. The optical receiver includes a photodetector. A differentiator differentiates a received signal detected by the photodetector and has a time constant smaller than the pulse width of the received signal. A decision circuit decides the polarity of an output pulse signal of the differentiator. A circuit is provided for detecting the occurrence of two or more consecutive same polarity pulses in the output signal of the decision circuit.
