The invention concerns a process for regenerating non-soliton RZ optical signals, including the stages: - compression of the RZ signals to produce soliton signals; - synchronous optical modulation of the soliton signals, using a clock; - decompression of the modulated soliton signals to produce non-soliton RZ signals. Through this process, soliton modulation techniques can be applied to non-soliton RZ links such that the rate or length of transmission thereof without error increases with no necessity of changing the transmission milieu. The invention also concerns a regenerator operating according to the process. The invention can also apply to NRZ signals with conversion to RZ signals. It can also apply to RZ or NRZ signals multiplexed.

L'invention concerne un procédé de régénération de signaux optiques RZ non solitons, comprenant les étapes de - compression des signaux RZ en signaux de type solitons; - modulation optique synchrone des signaux de type solitons, en utilisant une horloge; - décompression des signaux solitons modulés en signaux RZ non-solitons. Le procédé permet d'appliquer des techniques de modulation solitons à des liaisons RZ non-solitons, de sorte à en augmenter le débit ou la longueur de transmission sans erreur, et ceci sans avoir à modifier le milieu de transmission. L'invention a aussi pour objet un régénérateur fonctionnant selon le procédé. L'invention peut aussi s'appliquer à des signaux NRZ, en prévoyant une conversion en signaux RZ. Elle peut aussi s'appliquer â des signaux RZ ou NRZ multiplexés.
