42 ABSTRACT An optical shutter array chip according to this invention basically comprises, a substrate made of electrooptical cystals, plural individual electrodes which are formed on the substrate parallel in two or more rows, and on which specific voltages are applied independently; and common electrodes formed on the substrate, which extend so as to divide the individual electrodes into rows and have branched electrodes extending toward the spaces between the individual electrodes in a row, and on which a standard potential is applied; wherein the distances from a branched electrode on said common electrode to individual electrodes on its right and left are set differently with a specific ratio. A driving method of the optical shutter array chip according to this invention is basically characterized in that a short-time pulse voltage is applied on electrodes when the driving pulse voltage is not applied so that the total number of times to apply said driving pulse voltage and short-time pulse voltage per unit time shoud always be almost constant. PLZT for optical shutter array chip according to this invention is characterized in that the mean grain size of the PLZT is 5 µm or shorter and the mean grain sectional area of the PLZT is 1/150 or smaller of the area of dots to be formed.
