A method and apparatus for optical spectral power monitoring using a time- division-multiplexed detection scheme. The apparatus uses a wavelength- dispersing means (120) such as a diffraction grating to separate an optical signal into multiple spectral channels, and an array of beam-manipulating elements (140) positioned to correspond with the spectral channels. The beam- manipulating elements are individually controllable so as to direct the spectral channels into an optical detector (150) in a time-division- multiplexed sequence. The apparatus may further employ a polarization diversity scheme for polarization-insensitive operation. This enhances the spectral resolution of the apparatus while providing improved accuracy in spectral power detection. Spectral power monitors constructed according to the present disclosure are well-suited for WDM optical networking applications.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de contrôle de puissance optique spectrale utilisant un schéma de détection à multiplexage temporel. L'appareil utilise un moyen de dispersion en longueur d'onde (120) de type réseau de diffraction afin de diviser un signal optique en plusieurs bandes spectrales, ainsi qu'un réseau d'éléments de manipulation de faisceau (140) placé de manière à correspondre avec les bandes spectrales. Lesdits éléments de manipulation de faisceau sont contrôlables individuellement afin que les bandes spectrales soient dirigées dans un détecteur optique (150) dans une séquence à multiplexage temporel. Ledit appareil peut en outre utiliser un schéma de diversité de polarisation, ce qui le rend insensible à la polarisation. La résolution spectrale dudit appareil est ainsi augmentée ainsi que la précision de détection de la puissance spectrale. Les contrôleurs de puissance spectrale obtenus selon l'invention sont particulièrement aptes à être utilisés dans des réseaux optiques WDM.
