An optical switch serves to deflect an incident wave in a given, selected direction. Suited as part of an optical switch is a transparent material in which a three-dimensional diffraction pattern can be produced by applying an electric field and by which the direction of the wave can be changed. An optical switch according to the invention comprises a material with nonlinear optical properties in which the three-dimensional diffraction pattern is recorded. The material forms at least a single layer (2) overlying a substrate (1). Electrodes (3- 6) are provided; by applying an electric field to these electrodes, the diffraction pattern in the layer (2) can be changed. Part of the wave incident on the layer (2) is deflected in accordance with the strength of the electric field applied between the electrodes (3 - 6).
Un commutateur optique sert à dévier une onde incidente vers une direction choisie. Une image diffractionnelle tridimensionnelle peut être produite dans un matériau translucide faisant partie d'un commutateur optique par l'application d'un champ électrique, ce qui permet de changer la direction de l'onde. Dans cette invention, un commutateur optique comprend un matériau doté de propriétés optiques non linéaires dans lequel est enregistrée l'image diffractionnelle tridimensionnelle. Le matériau forme au moins une couche unique (2) sus-jacente à un substrat (1). Des électrodes (3 - 6) sont fournis; l'application d'un champ électrique à ces électrodes permet de changer l'image diffractionnelle dans la couche (2). Une partie de l'onde incidente sur la couche (2) est déviée conformément à la puissance du champ électrique appliqué entre les électrodes (3 - 6).
