ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Conventional optical ladders have several optical sensors connected in parallel between an input and output bus via respective input and output couplers. Radiation from a source is supplied to the input bus from where it is coupled to each sensor in turn after passage through any upstream input couplers on the input bus. The output couplers are connected such that radiation on the output bus flows in the opposite direction from the input bus with the radiation from the sensor furthest from the source passing through the output couplers of the other sensors before reaching a radiation detector. In the present invention, the output couplers are connected in the opposite way so that radiation on the output bus flows in the same sense as on the input bus with radiation from the sensor closest the source passing through the output couplers of all the other sensors before reaching the detector. In this way, all the input and output couplers can have identical coupling coefficients.
