ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for detecting torque in a shaft comprises a pair of opposing rotary members, each bearing an optical grid and mounted on the shaft with a predetermined spacing between their points of attachment so that a changing Moire fringe pat- tern is formed as the angular relationship of the two rotary members is changed owing to torsion in the shaft and detecting means for detecting a shift in the Moire fringe pattern, whereby the torque in the shaft can be determined.
