An optical trackpad module (110) is described herein. The module (110) includes a light source (302) and a trackpad (135) that is optically coupled to the light source (302) such that light from the light source (302) can reach the trackpad (135). The trackpad (135) is configured to receive an input object (500). The module (110) also includes a sensor array (304) that receives at least some of the light from the light source (302) that is reflected off the input object (500). The sensor array (304) is divided into sub-sections (304a-d), and each sub-section (304a-d) corresponds to a portion (135a-d) of the trackpad (135). In addition, each sub-section (304a-d) detects at least translational movement of the input object (500) on the corresponding trackpad portions (135a-d) to enable detection of rotational motion of the input object (500) on the trackpad (135).
