An optical transmission line and an optical communication system for high-quality transmission of signal light using distributed Raman amplification are disclosed. In an optical communication system 1, an optical transmission line 10 including a first optical fiber 11 and a second optical fiber 12, which are connected to each other by means of fusion, is disposed between an optical repeater 30 and an optical repeater 40. The effective core area of the optical fiber 11 is smaller than the effective core area of the optical fiber 12. The absolute value of the chromatic dispersion of the optical fiber 12 is smaller than that of the optical fiber 11. When the lengths of the optical fibers 11 and 12 are represented by L1 and L2, respectively, the ratio L2/(L2 + L2) is not less than 0.5.
