7 ABSTRACT: Optical transmission system, comprising a laser diode which is coupled to a transmission fibre via a coupling path. The coupling path includes a monomode fibre or the series arrangement of a monomode fibre and a plurality of multimode fibre lengths, the cross-section of which, seen from the laser, increases in size. As a result thereof the mode noise and the reflection noise in the optical system is drastically reduced.
