The invention comprises an optical transmission system (OTS) consisting of several lengths of optical fibre (FDS) each with one optical fibre (SSMF) and a dispersion compensation unit (DCF). The dispersion compensation units (DCF) compensate for the fibre dispersion (d) in each fibre length (FDS1 to FDS4) in such a way that the remaining residual dispersion (Drest) per compensated fibre length (FDS1 to FDS4) approximates in each case to the same dispersion sum (.DELTA.D).
