PHN 8413 ABSTRACT: The invention relates to a coupling element for an optical system, in which the coupling element comprises a ball lens and a holder. The ball lens preferably has a refractive index, which is dependent on the radius of a shell in the lens. The holder has a capillary duct, in which the ball lens and an end of an optical fibre are fixed opposite each other. The capillary, the ball lens and the fibre have substantially the same diameter for easy optical alignment of the lens and the end of the fibre. Using such optical coupling elements (monomode) fibres can be coupled to each other thereby permitting larger dimensional tolerances due to the use of said lenses.
