A variable-ratio optical sputter for dividing a beam of light launched into an input arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer into a plurality of sub-beams, each sub- beam having a predetermined intensity is disclosed. A transfer matrix is used to derive analytical expressions for an intensity distribution at the output ports of an integrated optical N x N generalized Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The analytical expressions for the intensity distribution are a function of one or more phase shifts applied to linking arms of two multimode interference couplers that form the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. These expressions form a system of nonlinear equations that are numerically solved for the phase shifts required, to achieve a specified intensity distribution for variable-ratio power splitting.
