A tunable optical transmission circuit has a light source (20) forming an input to a waveguide (12), a detector (21) detecting light output from the waveguide, a comparator for comparing the output with a predetermined value to generate a difference signal and a waveguide trimmer for changing the waveguide transmission in dependence on the difference signal until the output matches the predetermined value. In a preferred embodiment, trimming of the waveguide is effected by use of a trimming laser (30) operated to form a cut (31, 32) in the wall of the optical waveguide.
