A spherical lens (18) formed by fusing a generally homogeneous glass lens blank to the distal end of an optical fiber (20), heating and tensioning the lens blank to separate it in two segments with the segment attached to the optical fiber defining a tapered end, and heating the lens blank above its softening point so that the spherical lens (18) forms. The lens blank is fabricated from a 4 mole percent borosilicate glass having a softening point less than that of the core of the optical fiber (12). The lens member defines a throat region (16) adjacent the optical fiber whose cross-sectional dimension is substantially greater than the diameter of the optical fiber (12), but substantially less than the diameter of the spherical lens (18).

On décrit une lentille sphérique (18) qu'on a formée en soudant une ébauche de lentille en verre globalement homogène sur l'extrémité distale d'une fibre optique (20), en chauffant et en tendant l'ébauche de lentille pour séparer cette dernière en deux segments, le segment attaché à la fibre optique définissant une extrémité réduite et en chauffant l'ébauche de lentille au-delà de sa température de ramollissement pour que la lentille sphérique (18) se forme. L'ébauche de lentille est fabriquée à partir d'un verre au borosilicate à 4 moles pour cent ayant une température de ramollissement qui est inférieure à celle du noyau de la fibre optique (12). L'élément de lentille définit une région (16) de goulot adjacente à la fibre optique dont la dimension en coupe transversale est sensiblement supérieure au diamètre de la fibre optique (12) mais cependant sensiblement inférieure au diamètre de la lentille sphérique (18).
