An optical waveguide switch using two symmetric intensity modulators is proposed in this invention. Each intensity modulator comprises two waveguide channels and a modulated grating coupler attached on one waveguide channel. The introduction of a modulated grating-coupler on one channel makes the coupling between two waveguides become unidirectional and the coupling efficiency can be achieved to be approximately 100% in theory. Furthermore, a high-efficiency intensity modulator is implemented. In this invention, two this-type intensity modulators are used to build 2x2 waveguide switches by setting appropriate separation between two modulators and interaction length. Because the intensity modulators used in this invention have high extinction- ratios, the optical waveguide switches based on this invention have high extinction ratios. When an optical signal is input into the first modulator, it can either pass through this modulator or be switched to the second modulator by controlling a modulated grating- coupling effect. In the same manner, this switching process can also be performed for the optical signal input into the second modulator. Therefore, an effective 2x2 switching performance can be implemented with this structure. Even the MxN switching performances can also be implemented with more than two this-type intensity modulators.
