P-338 370-79-0040 OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE TERMINAL WITH RECESSED OPTICAL SURFACE ABSTRACT A terminal for optical fiber waveguides is disclosed with the end of a fiber bundle recessed from the end of the terminal to protect the optical surface of the fibers. A pin type terminal member (24') and the bundle of optical fibers (50) are ground and polished in flush relation at the forward end, A standoff or layer (66) is provided on the end surface (60) of the pin terminal (24) to recess the ends of the fibers. The layer (66) is selectively applied to the end of the metal pin (but not to the ends of the optical fibers) by electroplating.
