ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A polymer clad glass core waveguide is terminted by remov- ing part of the cladding at the end of the core, replacing the removed cladding with a sleeve of suitable optical properties, providing a second, longer sleeve over the first sleeve and part of the cladding to centre the core and strain relieve the junction between the first sleeve and the cladding, and then polishing the end of the core so that the core end and the end of both sleeves are flush. The invent- ion overcomes the problems of providing an optical finish to polymer clad waveguides due to the softness of the cladding, and ensures that the core end is aligned correctly even if the polymer cladding is not concentric.
