Disclosed in an apparatus for more efficiently and/or economically carrying out the liquid-phase oxidation of an oxidizable compound. The apparatus comprises a bubble column reactor, a downstream vessel and a conduit. The bubble column reactor comprises a vessel shell defining an elongated reaction zone, wherein the reaction zone includes a normally-lower end and a normally-upper end spaced from one another by an axial distance (L), wherein said reaction zone has a maximum diameter (D), wherein said reaction zone has an L:D ratio of at least about 6:1, one or more gas openings for introducing a gas-phase stream into the reaction zone, one or more liquid openings for introducing a liquid-phase stream into the reaction zone, and one or more elevated product openings for withdrawing a solid-phase product from the reaction zone, wherein the product openings are axially positioned further from the normally-lower end than at least one of the gas openings and at least one of the liquid openings. The downstream vessel is separate from the bubble column reactor. The conduit is for transporting at least a portion of the withdrawn solid-phase product from at least one of the product openings to the downstream vessel.
