ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A surveillance fence comprising at least two posts (10) each equipped with electro-magnetic radiation transmitters (12) and receivers (14) which establish two parallel communications links. Each posts (10) communicate with a surveillance computer at a headquarters (20). Only one post (10) communicates directly via cables with headquarters (20). Data is tansmitted over the communication links in opposite direction by modulating the elec~oD~ s~c ene~gy beams. A message start~ at he~dquar~rs (20) and is pas~ed along post (10) to po~t (lO) and bac~ ag~ to headquar~rs (20). E~h po~t ~10) can add informa~o7l to the m~e as it is p~sed along. The inte~rup~on of the electromagnetic ena~r~y beams ~ignals an inhusion whose location and time of o~urence is recorded by a proce~r (16) which ini~ate~ an alarm. If a post ~10) can not relay it~ in~u~ion data, the data is stor~ un~lthe commur~ica~ion~ liDk is r~stablished.
