Means of improving oral hygiene are described which include a dentrifrice for the differential disclosure of "new" and "old" plaque, a toothbrushing apparatus 10 which has a head provided with an array of upstanding bristles 11 formed into a V-shape and a probe adapted for use in assessing the degree of inflammation of various animal tissues. One embodiment of the probe 100 is useful for the examination of periodontal tissues, particularly the determination of pocket depths and the degree of gingivitis and is characterised by the means 106 by which a predetermined force is exerted on a needle member 101 when a depth measurement is made.
