The present invention is directed to a method in which there is made an oral morphine multiparticulate formulation which comprises a sustained-release particle that has a core comprising morphine and an osmotic agent. The particle is formed by applying a rate-controlling polymeric coating to the core. The coating comprises ammonio methacrylate copolymer present on the core in an amount such that the formulation achieves therapeutically effective plasma levels of morphine over at least 24 hours in a patient.
