ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An oral composition for treating gingivitis and periodontitis comprising an oral vechicle and an effective amount of the water insoluble antigingivitis agent, imidazoyl-1-(p-chlorophenoxy)3-3-dimethyl 2-butanone solubilized in a nonionic compound containing a mixture of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups of sufficient length to effect solubilization in an aqueous vehicle, in the weight ratio of 1:1 to 25:1 and preferably 3:1 to 25:1 solubilizer:imidazolyl compound, said agent being selectively effective against the gram negative anaerobic micro-organisms associated with periodontitis.
