Organic composite coated steel strips having improved corrosion resistance, weldability and coating adherence are obtained when an organic composite layer is applied to a chromate layer on a zinc or zinc base alloy plated steel substrate. The chromate layer containing up to 70% of Cr 6+ based on the total chromium weight is coated in a weight of 5 to 500 mg/m2 of Cr. The organic composite layer is formed to a dry weight of 0.2 to 3.0 g/m2 from a coating composition comprising (A) a silica sol having silica dispersed in an organic solvent with a water content of up to 3.0%, the silica having an organic deposit on its surface in an amount of up to 5.0% of C based on the total silica weight, the silica having an average particle size of 0.05 to 3.0 µm and a specific surface area of 50 to 800 m2/g, and (B) an organic resin binder having a number average molecular weight of at least 2,000. The coated strips are suitable for use as automobile bodies by press forming.

Obtention de tôles d'acier revêtues d'un composite organique - améliorées quant à la résistance à la corrosion, à la soudabilité et à l'adhérence des revêtements -, par application d'une couche de composite organique sur une couche de chromate recouvrant un substrat d'acier plaqué avec du zinc ou un alliage à base de zinc. La couche de chromate, renfermant jusqu'à 70 % de Cr6+, en prenant comme base la masse totale de chrome, est revêtue de Cr à raison de 5 à 500 mg/m2. La couche composite organique possède un poids sec de 0,2 à 3,0 g/m2 et est formée à partir d'une composition de revêtement comprenant : A) un sol de silice dispersée dans un solvant organique, avec jusqu'à 3,0 % de teneur en eau; la silice est recouverte à sa surface d'un dépôt organique renfermant jusqu'à 5,0 % de C, pourcentage basé sur le poids total de silice; la silice a une granulométrie moyenne de 0,05 à 3,0 microns et une aire surfacique spécifique de 50 à 800 m2/g; B) un liant à base de résine organique, possédant une masse molaire moyenne en nombre d'au moins 2000. Les tôles revêtues, après passage à la presse de formage, conviennent pour les carrosseries d'automobiles.
