An optical coupling device, or a compound waveguide (10), in which optical energy is coupled to or from an optical signal propagating along a transmitting waveguide is disclosed. The optical coupling device includes a thin film organic crystal waveguide (60) positioned in optical proximity to a portion of transmitting waveguide. The organic crystal waveguide (60) has a first, coupling surface facing the transmitting waveguide through which the optical energy is coupled. The transmitting waveguide may be a fiber optic having at least some material removed along a side thereof to facilitate the coupling of optical energy between the fiber optic and the organic crystal waveguide. Polishing and lapping methods for producing the thin film organic crystal waveguide, with optically smooth surfaces, are also disclosed, as are organic salt implementations of the organic crystal.

La présente invention concerne un dispositif de couplage optique ou un guide d'ondes (10) en composé, dans lequel l'énergie optique est couplée à ou à partir d'un signal optique qui se propage le long d'un guide d'ondes. Le dispositif de couplage optique comprend un guide d'ondes (60) en cristal organique à couche mince, placé à proximité optique d'une partie de guide d'ondes d'émission. Le guide d'ondes (60) en cristal organique présente une première surface de couplage opposée au guide d'ondes d'émission à travers lequel l'énergie optique est couplée. Le guide d'ondes d'émission peut être une fibre optique dont on a retiré au moins un peu de matière le long d'un côté du guide d'ondes de façon à faciliter le couplage de l'énergie optique entre la fibre optique et le guide d'ondes en cristal organique. La présente invention concerne également des procédés de polissage et de lissage permettant de produire le guide d'ondes organique à couche mince avec des surfaces optiquement lisses comme c'est le cas dans des applications de sel organique du cristal organique.
