-24- Abstract A process for the reduction of adsorbable organic halides FOX and optionally for the reduction in colour, of pulp mill effluent is presented. The process comprises the further treatment of the discharge from a pulp mill secondary effluent treatment stage in a tertiary, microbial treatment stage preferably using a selected mixture of bacteria. The process provides a economical method for the reduction of AOX and colour from pulp mill effluent.
