ORGANOPHILIC CLAY HAVING ENHANCED DISPERSIBILITY Abstract of the Disclosure The invention concerns the discovery that the viscosity of a liquid organic system can be increased by mixing with the system an amount of a specific organophilic clay in the absence of a polar organic dispersant for the organophilic display. The specific organophilic clay is the reaction product of a methyl benzyl dialkyl ammonium compound and a smectite-type clay having a cation exchange capacity of at least 75 milliequivalents per 100 grams of the clay. The alkyl radicals independently contain from 14 to 20 carbon atoms and the amount of the ammonium compound is from 100 to 120 milliequivalents per 100 grams of the clay, 100% active clay basis. From 0% to 1.0% of water may also be added to the system. The invention thus avoids the need for conventional organic dispersants, which have a variety of disadvantages.
