ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: New phosphorus-containing condensation products are obtained by the dehydrocondensation of 10-hydroxy- methyl-9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphorphenanthrene-10- oxide compounds with melamine or benzoguanamine, or by condensing 9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphor-phenanthrene- 10-oxide compounds with alkoxymethyl melamines or alkoxymethyl benzoguanamines by heating. The resulting compounds have the following Formula I Image wherein Z represents the radical Image or -NH2-xXx and X is the radical Image II wherein R1, R2 and R3 can be the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, 2 halogen atom, an alkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an aralkyl group, a cyclohexyl group or a phenyl group, x is 0, 1 or 2 and y is from 1 to 4. These phosphorus-containing condensation products are partic- ularly useful as flame retardants for various synthetic resins.
