ORGANOSOLV PROCESS FOR HYDROLYTIC DECOMPOSITION OF MIXED LIGNOCELLULOSIC AND STARCH MATERIALS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Comminuted cellulose and starch containing vegetable materials, which may or may not contain lignin, are partial- ly or totally hydrolyzed or saccharified by using an aqueous acetone solvent mixture containing catalytic amounts of acid- ic compounds and containing in excess of 70 per cent by volume of acetone and up to virtually anhydrous acetone. The process is carried out at elevated reaction temperatures, preferably at 145°C to 230°C in a closed vessel for a limited period of time and then withdrawing the solution containing the dissolved sugars and lignin and rapidly cooling the solution such that the resultant dissolved sugars from the hydrolysis are not deg- raded into non-sugars. The reaction conditions are selected in such a way that the polymeric carbohydrate materials and lignin if present are dissolved simultaneously and such that ninety percent of the available sugars in the unhydrolysed material become available as monomeric sugars. Sugars, lignins and protein derived are recovered separately along with the solvent used.
